Chairman Michael Finley of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation in Washington was picked to lead a national organization working to recover mismanaged Indian Trust funds, and monitor federal agencies that manage those funds.
Finley was elected to be chairman of the Intertribal Monitoring Association on Indian Trust Funds at its annual meeting in Las Vegas earlier this month. He was elected by fellow association members, who represent 65 American Indian tribes.
Finley said every tribe — including the Colvilles — has a story about not being adequately compensated.
The association only recently came up with a method to help tribes determine how much tribes and individual American Indians should be owed due to mismanaged funds, he said.
