St. Regis Mohawk Tribe fights diabetes

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s diabetes program has collected more than $1.1 million to build a center for diabetes education, prevention, and exercise.

The $6.8 million building will be constructed in phases, but when it is finished it will have classrooms, practice kitchens to teach people how to cook healthy meals, an indoor walking track and a pool, as well as offices for Let’s Get Healthy personnel.

Diabetes is an epidemic among American Indian populations. At Akwesasne, at least 13% of the population has the disease and even more go undiagnosed, she said.

Nationally, approximately 16.5% of native populations have been diagnosed with diabetes, compared with 6.6% of non-Hispanic whites, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
