U.N. report defines Colombia's indigenous situation "grave and critical"

A UN report says that Colombia must develop a political solution to the country’s violent conflict to improve the “grave and critical” situation of its indigenous people.

The UN reports says the situation of the country’s indigenous people has worsened and violence has escalated in areas where indigenous people live.

The violence comes, apparently, from paramilitary groups which continue despite their official disarmament and especially threaten the indigenous population.

The UN Special Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya, demands that the government make more of an effort to protect indigenous leaders.
