Umatilla Indian named to first-team Parade All-American BB team

Shoni Schimmel, a 5-foot-9 senior point guard who led Franklin High School of Southeast Portland to sixth place at the OSAA Class 6A girls basketball tournament this month, has been selected a first-team Parade All-American. She is a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in eastern Oregon.

Schimmel averaged 29.8 points and 7.7 assists her senior season for the Quakers, who won the Portland Interscholastic League championship before recording the school’s best finish in the girls basketball state tournament. Schimmel scored 805 points as a senior, the third-highest single-season total on record in Oregon.
