Federal agencies are planning work sessions across the country to work with Native Americans on suicide prevention. The meeting for the Rocky Mountain region is scheduled Nov. 23 in Billings, Montana and another session is set Dec. 2 in Rapid City, S.D.
The Indian Health Service, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Interior Department’s Bureau of Indian Affairs are involved. Interior Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Larry Echo Hawk says tribal leaders have asked for coordinated suicide prevention and intervention efforts, especially for youths. A national conference is planned Feb. 10 in Arlington, Virginia.
