U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar pledged to keep tribal sovereignty at the forefront as the federal government works on issues in Indian country.
Salazar made these remarks in a speech at the 67th convention of the National Congress of American Indians on Monday in Albuquerque. He also outlined some of the Indian related issues he is working on, including economic development on Indian lands, improved law enforcement and education, water settlements, restoring lands to tribes, and energy programs in Indian country.
Secretary Salazar stressed that the federal government must work with tribal governments on a nation-to-nation basis. He told tribal leaders that the Obama administration’s goal is to help tribal nations fulfill their goals for their own nations.
