The Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants to treat tribes the same as states.
I think that’s a good idea.
The NRC plans to begin giving tribes notice when commercial nuclear waste is being shipped across their reservations. NRC regulations already require that state governors be informed of certain shipments of nuclear and other waste passing through a state.
The commission is resurrecting a decade-old proposal in an effort to recognize tribal sovereignty. If a tribe opts in, it could not release the schedules or itineraries of the shipments but would be in a position to react more quickly to emergencies.
