Unbelieveably, bison are now running free in the United States. After dropping to a population as low as 24 a century ago, and all located in Yellowstone Park, the bison have rebounded. For years now, Yellowstone buffalo have been killed as they tried to roam outside the Park's boundaries. Ranchers fear that free roaming buffalo will spread brucellosis to cattle.
Recently, 94 wild Yellowstone bison were released southwest of Bozeman, Montana on Ted Turner's ranch. Although the bison are still contained within fenced parcels, ranging from 800 to 8,000 acres, they are running free. In fact these 94 buffalo now number 150 just a year and a half after their release in May 2010.
