BP America pays $5 million penalty for misleading reports on Southern Ute lands

In a fairly common occurrence, another oil company has had to pay fines for "stealing" oil from Indian lands.  In the past many other oil companies have paid fines/penalties of $33 and $45 million for underreporting production of oil produced off tribal and individual Indian lands.

The Associated Press reports that "BP America Inc. has paid a $5 million civil penalty for submitting false, inaccurate, or misleading reports for energy production on Southern Ute Indian Tribal lands in southwestern Colorado."

Auditors found that BP used incorrect royalty rates and prices for the requried royalty payments. BP also reported production for the wrong leases.
